Dubbo is western NSW's largest service centre and one of regional Australia's fastest-changing towns. With 39,300 residents and a median age of 35, it is younger than most regional centres. Household incomes average $1,690 per week. About 69.6% of households are families. The workforce splits 58% white collar and 42% blue collar, with health and social services employing 25.2% of all workers.
The population is 90.9% Australian by heritage, and 90% speak only English at home. But the town is changing. South Asian communities now make up 4.3% of the population, driven by Indian healthcare workers filling regional medical shortages. The community score of 87 is strong. Dubbo residents stay an average of 4.7 years, which is high for a regional town. It is a place where people build lives rather than pass through.
The South Asian community in Dubbo concentrates heavily in the central commercial belt. Around Brisbane Street and Carrington Square, 30.6% of residents have South Asian heritage. The Belmore Street and Bishop Street area follows at 26.5%. Cobra Street and Fitzroy Street sit at 24.9%. These pockets cluster near the hospital and main commercial strip, where Indian-born doctors, nurses, and allied health workers have settled. Household incomes in these blocks range from $1,339 to $1,662 per week.
The wealthiest pockets are on Dubbo's rural fringe. Camp Road near Obley Road has household incomes of $7,000 per week, though with only a handful of properties. The newer estates around Clearwater Place and Englewood Avenue hit $3,143 per week. Bellinger Place and Crossroads Drive follow at $3,094 per week. These are large-lot estates with 95% or higher Australian-born populations.
The youngest areas are at Armstrong Crescent and Cobbora Road, with median ages of 27. These are newer housing estates on the edges of town, attracting young families with affordable land. Incomes sit at $1,062 to $1,097 per week. At the other extreme, Birch Avenue and Buckingham Drive have a median age of 79 and incomes of just $637 per week, which is aged-care territory.
The northern suburbs around Bunglegumbie Road are almost entirely Australian-born at 97%. Incomes are modest at $2,035 per week and the feel is semi-rural. The town's small Asian community clusters separately from the South Asian belt, peaking at 5.9% around Apsley Crescent and Champagne Drive in the newer eastern estates.
Conservatism score:
Dubbo is firmly right-leaning. Some 60.8% of residents vote for right-wing parties, while just 23.5% lean left. This is Nationals and Liberal territory where agriculture, small business, and regional development drive the political conversation. The conservative vote reflects a population with strong family structures, high home ownership, and deep connections to the land. Dubbo's politics are pragmatic rather than ideological.
