We\u2019ll leave the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationmaster.com\">international stats<\/a> to NationMaster while we focus on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microburbs.com.au\">Australian suburbs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What are our Microburbs? They\u2019re small areas\u00a0typically of 200-800 people\u00a0defined by demographic, economic, transport and geographic features. \u00a0The\u00a0Australian Bureau of Statistics does great work drilling down into the population geography of Australia. \u00a0We draw on that analysis and many other sources to present a detailed view of neighbourhoods that we think is far more useful and relevant to householders than \u00a0the customary suburb view. \u00a0We still show you suburb level information, but we also show you the microburbs within.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Our mission is still the same &#8211; to give buyers all the information they need to decide whether to <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microburbs.com.au\">buy a property<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">. But as we talked to home buyers and pored endlessly over our huge database, we had a realisation we need to share:<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Suburbs are broken!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re not talking about a lack of public transport or amenities, or decline in community (though we\u2019ll have plenty to say on these topics later). We\u2019re talking about the very definition of suburbs &#8211; that they\u2019re overused.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When people search for a property they tend to pick a suburb that fits their criteria, then look for properties in that suburb. This has two big problems:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The first is that suburbs are really diverse places, containing several distinct neighbourhoods, or microburbs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Take the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microburbs.com.au\/Real-Estate\/Hunters-Hill\">Hunters Hill <\/a>in Sydney, known for its waterfront mansions and sandstone cottages, regularly starring on lists of the most affluent suburbs. Hunters Hill is actually 20 separate microburbs. One is a large public housing estate. One is a boys\u2019 boarding school. Even after you exclude those, one has a median income of $989 per week, which is the average for Sydney. Another has a median income of $2,937.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microburbs.com.au\/NSW\/Sydney\/Hunters-Hill?loc=Hunters+Hill%2C+New+South+Wales%2C+Australia#affluence\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.microburbs.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/huntershillmedianincome.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602px;\" height=\"452px;\" \/><\/a>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microburbs.com.au\/Affluence-Economy\/Hunters-Hill\">Median Incomes for Hunters Hill on Microburbs<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The second is that suburbs are big places, and the convenience of living in the lifestyle hub can be very different to living at the fringes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you\u2019re out shopping in nearby Chatswood on a Sunday afternoon and need to be home in Hunters Hill on public transport by 3pm, you&#8217;ll really need to know your address. If you\u2019re near the main road you can leave at 2:30. If you\u2019re on the southern end it\u2019s 1:30, because you&#8217;ll need an extra bus change, and an extra hour, to get there. And this an area that still has buses on a Sunday afternoon!
